AA1K is celebrating his 59th year as an amateur radio operator.
After learning how to become a “ham” through the Boy Scouts, under instruction of Peter Sommsich (K3VWH, ex-HA8S, HA8Z) – now a Silent Key), Jon passed the Novice license in 1964, at age 12. He was assigned the callsign WN3BGN, which became WA3BGN when he passed the General Class license in 1965. His call was changed to AA1K after passing the Extra Class license exam in 1978.
An active member of the Frankford Radio Club, Jon is active in the CQ Worldwide DX SSB and CW contests, the ARRL 160 Meter Contest, the CQ WW DX 160 meter CW contest and the ARRL DX CW and SSB competitions
He is an active DXer, on the top of the ARRL’s DXCC Honor Roll, and loves the pursuit of DX on the 160-meter band, having communicated with 329 entities on that band.
His yl Jeanie is AB1P and son Adam is N3TTT. Adam’s wife Dawn is KC3SHG. Jon’s late father, Charley, held the callsign WN3EEH in the 1960s.
